Evil ©

By Dr. Akiva Gamliel Belk

This study is dedicated in the loving memory of Mr. Michael and Mrs. Channah Sakash, may they rest in peace.

We observe the death of Yehudah's firstborn son and his second born son because of their evil. This evil is autoeroticism / coitus interruptus, spilling one's seed of life onto the ground... Hashem termed this an evil act. Bereishis 38:7 We see this evil in the letters of Ayr’s name, Ayin Reish. If we reverse their order they spell Rah, meaning evil.

Ha Torah states, And Yehudah took a wife to Ayr his firstborn and her name was Tamar. {Bereishis 38:6} Our sages teach that Tamar was the daughter of Shem, Noach’s oldest son. As we review the Hebrew, we notice that the letter Lamid is added as a connector to the Ayin and the Reish. Together they equal the Gematria of 300. They also point to the center of our {man's} inclination, our Yay Tzer. Unfortunately in Ayr’s situation his Yay Tzer was a Yay Tzer Rah, an evil inclination.

On the one hand, we have an evil man, Ayr, with a righteous wife, Tamar. This is a paradox. Our sages rave about Tamar's righteousness. She went to the cave of Avraham to pray for a close relative to carry on the seed from her departed husbands, Ayr and Oh Nawn. Ha Torah records that she covered her face NOT as a harlot but as a righteous woman. When she was in her father-in-law's house she also covered her face because of her righteousness. Yehudah did not know what his daughter-in-law looked like. She was righteous! Her righteousness is represented by the mysterious Mem in the center of her name. The Gematria Godal of the letter Mem is also 640. Tamar was Toh Mehr {straight} like a palm tree rising out of the ground. If we reverse the order of the letters of Tamar’s name they spell Raw Maht {height, high place}. So the essence of who Tamar Mystically is reveals that she is straight. She is righteous! She has a high place. She is steady, unmoving like a straight pillar. This is the same spelling of Tamar with a different pronunciation. Because of Tamar’s righteous actions, her descendants include Dovid Ha Melech, Shlomo Ha Melech and the coming Moshiach!

Now on the other hand, the Gematria Miluy of Ayr is also 640. That is, all of the Hebrew spelling of all the letters of Ayr’s name equals the total essence of who he is, of what he is. Ayr’s Gematria represents the other side. For each Gematria their is a good and evil nature, similar to the Yetzer Tov and Yetzer Raw. Since Tamar is righteous her life reflects the good Gematrias of 640. Because Ayr is only evil and not righteous like his wife Tamar, only evil Gematrias apply to him. Ayr was Tah Mayr {rebellious}. Again, this is a different pronunciation of the same spelling of Tamar. In addition Ayr was Moh Raht {[full of] bitterness, rancor, spite} towards our Creator and those that loved Him.

Now when we consider the Gematria of Oh Nawn’s name, it is 107. It matches the word Zoh Neem {[One who] goes astray}. His name represents what Hashem does to the evil, Yoh Chi Lay Moh {It consumes them} as in... In Your great majesty, You {G-d} destroy Your opponents. You send forth Your fury. It {Yoh Chi Lay Moh} consumes them [as easily] as straw. Shemos15:7 Oh Nawn represents those who, as Hashem said, Maw Aw Soo {despised} My laws... and loathed, rejected My statutes. Vayikra 26:43 Which is exactly what Er and Onan did. They both despised and rejected Hashem's statutes!

So, holy classmates, through the Gematria of these names we perceive in Ayr and Oh Nawn destruction, evil, sexual sins, rancor, rebellion, and the despising of and rejection of Hashem, Ha Torah and their father’s guidance.. We see two young men who went astray. In Tamar we see the steady, tall, unwavering pillar of righteousness. We see the strength of Torah observance and honor to Hashem. Thank G-d Tamar’s righteousness won out!!

Blessings and peace!
