The Gematria Of Tefillin And Jubilee, 570 ©

By Dr. Akiva G. Belk

This study of the weekly parsha is dedicated by the family of Akiva G. Belk in the loving memory of Mrs. Ethel Channah Sakash Belk, may she rest in peace.

The Gematria of 570 is among one of my favorites. From early in the days when I returned to Yiddishkeit I have deeply cherished its special message.

In the Shema we {the Jewish men from thirteen years and up} are commanded by G-d in the Torah, "Place these words of Mine upon your heart and upon your soul; bind them for a sign upon your arm and let them be tefillin between your eyes..." See Deuteronomy 11: 13-21

Each morning at the time of prayer, Shacharis, we don our tefillin with special blessings. It is a routine, a good routine. It is a habit, a good habit. But wearing tefillin is more than that. I don't suppose that those who wear tefillin have ever felt the HEAVY WEIGHT of the obligation of fulfilling the mitzvah. Wearing tefillin is a sign. It is a sign of the generations passed from father to son to grandson. It is a sign of responsibility! It is a sign of maturity. It is a sign of one's Jewishness. It is also a sign of Gematria.

The Gematria of tefillin is 570.

{from right to left}

Tefillin
570 = Nun = 50 + Yud = 10 + Lamed = 30 + Pey = 80 + Sav = 400

One should note that any challenge to not wear their tefillin comes from Yetzer Raw, meaning evil inclination. I do not designate or preface evil inclination with the letter "Hey" meaning "the", as some do, because the letter Hey designates a definite article. Hashem, "The" Creator, "The" King should rightly receive a definite article, but my personal tester - my Yetzer Raw - should NOT! The Gematria for Yetzer Raw is 570.

{from right to left}

Yetzer Raw
570 = Ayin = 70 + Reish = 200 = Reish = 200 + Tzaddi = 90 + Yud = 10

We should also note that the G-d given responsibility of Yetzer Raw is to test us. Our father Avraham Aveinu was tested Yeh Sehr meaning "Ten" {times}. He passed each test, thank G-d! The Gematria for ten is 570.

{from right to left}
Yeh Sehr
570 = Reish = 200 + Sin = 300 + Ayin = 70

Unfortunately there are times in life where we are forced to face an evil man, an evil person. To say they are unpleasant to deal with does not come close to the level of frustration they attempt to invoke. That individual is NOT Yetzer Raw. That person is Raw Shaw, meaning evil / wicked. There is a difference between the two. One is a tester sent to test and strengthen us, the other is a destroyer sent to ruin us, G-d forbid! We deal with both in the same manner. We don our royal crown. We don our tefillin. Our tefillin is the sign that we are obedient to our King, Hashem, and His commands and His Torah. We wrap our weaker hand and arm with tefillin as a form of "SPIRITUAL ARMOR" and by fulfilling the commandment of tefillin we defeat Yetzer Raw and Raw Shaw, thank G-d. The Gematria for Raw Shaw is 570.

Raw Shaw
570 = Ayin = 70 + Shin = 300 + Reish = 200

Now there is much, much more to the Gematria 570 including but not limited to
Yoh Vahl Hee Tee Yeh Law Chem, meaning "It shall be for you a Jubilee." Leviticus 25:10. In other words, wearing tefillin is an expression of freedom. Wearing tefillin expresses honor to the halachas of Shemittat Karka'ot (the Sabbatical year as regards agricultural work in Eretz Yisroel). Observing the mitzvah of putting the tefillin on, which is like the accumulation of seven Sabbatical years {7 x 7 = 49} in that it is approaching the fiftieth year, the year of Jubilee, just as wearing tefillin is a spiritual act whereby one elevates towards the fiftieth level. Wearing tefillin is an expression of our superiority over Yetzer Raw and Raw Shaw.

There are many other expressions that reinforce the powerful sign of donning tefillin and reciting the Shema and Shemoneh Esrei. This is a very deep subject!

...I would really appreciate it if you would join with us by sharing in the mitzvah of JewishPath.

Thank you!

Wishing you the best,
