The Essence of Yosief's Name
as Spoken by Pharaoh...

This study of mysticism in Hebrew Gematria is dedicated in the loving memory of Mr. Michael & Mrs. Chanah Sakash, may they rest in peace.

The Torah says, "Pharaoh gave Yosief the name 'Tzafnas Paneiach'..." Genesis 41:45 Rashi and Onkelos indicate that this name means, 'the explainer of hidden things.' The Septuagint indicates it means 'salvation of the world'. The Gematria combination of both words is 828:

Tzawf Nahs - Pah Nay Ach
Tzawf Nahs
620 =
Sav = 400 + Nun = 50 + Pey = 80 + Tzaddi = 90

Pah Nay Ach
208 =
Ches = 8 + Nun = 50 + Ayin = 70 + Pey = 80

828 = 620 + 208

Tzawf Nahs - Pah Nay Ach {Gematria Kotel}
836 = 620 + 4 letters + 208 + 4 letters

The Gematria Kotel {regular Gematria plus total number of letters} 836 reveals Lee Shoo Aw Si Chaw, meaning 'For your salvation.' This appears to be in agreement with the Septuagint understanding. Certainly Yoseif was used by Hashem to save the world from starvation. The Torah states in next week's parsha "to preserve life" {Genesis 45:6} and "to insure your survival in the land." {Genesis 45:7}

Lee Shoo Aw Si Chaw {For your salvation}
836 = Chof 20 + Sav 400 + Ayin 70 + Vav 6 + Shin 300 + Yud 10 + Lamid 30

Now, holy reader, the word Pee Nawch {which has the same spelling as Pah Nay Ach} means "to decipher, decode, interpret, unravel {a puzzle}... which is what Yoseif did to Pharaoh's dream. {Genesis Chapter 41} This second word certainly is in agreement with both Rashi and Onkelos' understanding. The Gematria of each of these words is 208.

The result of Yosief's revealing was actually Hashem's revealing. Yosief said to the chief butler and the chief baker regarding their dreams, 'Do not interpretations belong to G-d." Genesis 40:8

Then notice Yosief's response to Pharaoh. "Pharaoh said to Yosief, 'I had a dream and there is no one to interpret it. I have heard it said about you that you hear a dream so as to interpret it.'

Yosief answered Pharaoh, saying, 'Not I. G-d will give Pharaoh his answer of peace.'" Genesis 41:15,16 Yosief's response was in keeping with Parshas "Vaw Ay Raw {Va'Eira} meaning "I revealed Myself" to Avraham and to Yaakov...." Exodus 6:3 From Yosief's response to Pharaoh's dream it is also clear that Hashem revealed Himself to Yosief, the great grandson of Avraham and the son of Yaakov.

Pah Nay Ach
Pee Nawch
208 =
Ches = 8 + Nun = 50 + Ayin = 70 + Pey = 80

Vaw Ay Raw {I revealed Myself}
208 = Aleph = 1 + Reish = 200 + Aleph = 1 + Vav = 6

In the Gematria of the first word of Yosief's name, Tzawf Nahs, the first three letters form the word Tzaw Pahn meaning "to be hidden, conceal." Again this reinforces the understanding of Rashi and Onkelos: 'the explainer of hidden things.'

It also points to the beginning and end of Yosief's slavery. In the beginning Yosief was sold for twenty pieces of silver Eh Sai Reem, meaning "twenty", by his brothers. " {The} Midianite merchants passed by. They {the brothers} pulled Yosief up from the pit and sold Yosief to the Yishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver..." Genesis 37:28 In the end Yosief soared above his problems. He soared above it all, Cah Ni Shaw Reem, implying "{he soared} like eagles."

Tzawf Nahs
620 =
Sav = 400 + Nun = 50 + Pey = 80 + Tzaddi = 90

Eh Sai Reem {twenty}
620 = Mem = 40 + Yud = 10 + Reish = 200 + Sin = 300 + Ayin = 70

Cah Ni Shaw Reem {like eagles}
620 = Mem 40 + Yud 10 + Reish 200 + Shin 300 + Nun 50 + Chof 20

Also within the name given to Yosief by Pharaoh we see the Gematria Mispar Katan of 54 in the word Mah Tay, meaning "Rod {of leadership}" passed from Yosief to Moshe who was the next great leader. So the rod that Yosief laid down Moshe took up. We quote from our article entitled "The Rod of Moshe:" Then at the conclusion of the conversation, Hashem charged Moshe, saying, "Take 'THE ROD' in your hand, for with it you will perform the [miraculous] signs." Ha Mah Teh, meaning "THE ROD" has the Gematria of 59. Fifty-nine represents the time from Yosief laying the rod down at his death and Moshe picking the rod up at his birth. Remember that Pharaoh ordered the Hebrew midwives to kill every male child in Exodus 1:16. Why? Rashi states, "His astrologers had told him that a son was to be born who would liberate them."

{From Right to Left}
Ha Mah Teh {the rod}
59 =
Hey = 5 + Tes = 9 + Mem = 40 + Hey = 5

Mah Tay
54 =
Hey = 5 + Tes = 9 + Mem = 40

Tzawf Nahs - Pah Nay Ach
Tzawf Nahs {Gematria Mispar Katan}
26 = Sav = 4 + Nun = 5 + Pey = 8 + Tzaddi = 9

Pah Nay Ach
28 =
Ches = 8 + Nun = 5 + Ayin = 7 + Pey = 8

54 = 26 + 28

So we observe much in Yosief's name Tzawf Nahs - Pah Nay Ach.

Wishing you the best!,
